Most Water-types can retain or produce additional water naturally, though... [Little mister know-it-all replies sourly, still skeptical of these lake-producing rocks.]

Even if it was natural... the surface down there, I mean, if it's that bad then why're you going down there? What's down there to bother looking at?

That's what I mean. It's like that, just... not a living being. I don't think.

[he shrugs.]

Just curious. There's definitely a settlement down there, so it can't be that bad, surely... you're a young trainer! Don't you have a sense of adventure?

[blueser]

[Blue turns to deliver Archie a withering look, then tilts his head in consideration.]

When I arrived here, everyone wasted their breath telling me how casual battling like we do back home was too reckless because there's no easy healing. [He begins, looking Archie up and down.] So why would I go down to a part of this place that's apparently so dangerous nothing can live in it, when there's no Pokémon to be found and I don't even know left from right yet around here?

If you wanna talk reckless, that's reckless. What if my Pokémon got hurt down there?

[Pragmatic, that Blue Oak.]

[broceanic]

I'm going with a healer, [he says with a shrug.] Even then...

[he shrugs.]

I trust my team enough to be able to handle it. If things get too hairy then we won't go further.

[blueser]

A healer...? [Blue tilts his head.] Does someone have a Chansey or something...?

...Whatever. If there's any monsters down there worth catching or studying, tell me. Then, maybe, I'll go.

So then. Battling really is fine?

[broceanic]

Nah, she's non-human. It's a magical ability she has, though I don't know if it's something that's unique to her species or not.

[he shrugs.]

Sure. I'll let you know. I mean, I'd battle but only if my team were happy with it. [he saunters over towards arcanine to get a better look at the big boofer.] I may have been overly cautious before... now they're gettin' restless.

[blueser]

A person...? [Blue's head tilts. He still doesn't quite get that whole thing, but] Like that Psyduck guy? Well, what is she?

[Arcanine has been alternately wrasslin' and playing chase with Mightyena, and currently they're playing keep-away with a large stick on the edge of the lakebed. Arcanine looks up with an rrf, wagging expectantly at Archie.]

It's not good for them, you know. [Blue calls, watching how the dogs tussle.] When Pokémon are used to battling all the time, their energy only builds up faster.

[He glances towards Eevee batting at the water, briefly frowning with concern.]

[broceanic]

Yeah, like him. She's a Zora-- she's entirely red and white and looks a bit like she has a Magikarp tail sticking out the back of her head...

[he's a little distracted by arcanine, holding a hand out for it to sniff at. please let him pet...]

Aye, no kiddin'. Arceus only knows what Steven Stone's been doin' all this time.

[blueser]

[Gyarados perks up at the mention of a Magikarp-person, rumbling inquisitively at Sharpedo. Do you know what he's talking about, fish pal?]

[Arcanine happily pads over to snuffle, glancing to his trainer before standing still to receive pets.]

...That Metagross of his is too strong to have just been sitting around. I have no intention of going soft while I'm here, so I'll just have to stomp you all in the meantime. [Blue flashes a toothy smirk.] Hmm. You battled him since coming here?

[broceanic]

[sharpedo nods back-- he's been told of the zora here but hasn't actually managed to meet any! a shame! apparently they can swim up waterfalls as well!

archie puts his hands on arcanine's fuzzy head, scritching behind his ears. like with gyarados, he doesn't have any fear of the bigger pokémon.]

A couple times. Not seriously. Sparring, more than anything.

[blueser]

[Gyarados seems very impressed by this. People that can use Waterfall...?]

He's a Steel-type specialist, right? [Blue drawls, keeping his eye on Archie while he scritches Arcanine.] ...Well, I woulda figured not seriously, anyway. He's a Champion, after all. [And Archie is.... Well, he supposes he should figure that he's somewhat competent, if he was leading a team. Was he even as strong as Giovanni had been?]

I don't know too much about Hoenn's Pokémon, but Johto has a Steel-type Leader now, as well. Steel's reclassification was pretty recent, so does that mean he also used Rock types before?

[broceanic]

Yeah. [archie isn't stupid-- he can tell what blue is doing. he is just not going to discourage it.] As seriously as a Champion can be. Ex-champ, whatever.

[unaware of what blue is pondering about him, archie coos at arcanine, running his fingers through its mane. so soft and thick...!]

Nah, mostly Steel, from what I know. I could be wrong, but I'm only goin' off what May's told me and what I've seen of his here. I know for sure he can mega-evolve his Metagross, though. That's the one you'll want to look out for. Giga Impact on that? Whoof.

[blueser]

I saw it already. [Blue narrows his eyes, a scowl taking his face. That thing was strong, he could tell that there was no hesitance in Steven's body language then, of victory.]

[That really annoyed the heck out of Blue...]

[He glances as Archie pats Arcanine, the pupper wiggling as his fur is ruffled.] But, it's still weak to Fire. Isn't that right? Of course you'd be at a disadvantage. I wouldn't.

Where'd he learn that ability, anyway? Mega Evolution isn't used in my region.

[broceanic]

Ah! [...] Wait, what? When?

[god anyway, he's only half paying attention, giving arcanine all the attention, laughing at how delighted it is. what a good boy... mightyena gets a little jealous and barks, trotting over to shove its snout into blue's hands.]

I don't know. He might've been to Kalos to train. I taught it to myself. Maybe he did the same. You'd have to ask.

[blueser]

That tower the Mittens took over. [Here's where we ignore the timey wimey shit of them both meeting Blue from the same prompt, yes? Yes okay] He came in there guns blazing... Hmph, at least he acts like a Champion ought to, even though he was just overreacting.

But Kalos, huh.... [He's heard a lot about the region.... Gramps had mentioned an academy in Lumiose that the professor living there, Sycamore, had offered a spot in for Blue, if he wanted to come and try the exchange program. But he'd still been undecided when he ended up here...] --Hold on, you taught yourself something like that?

[Blue levels Archie with a disbelieving look-over. Well. That was an interesting bit of info that made him look a little differently.] ...How? What's Mega Evolution caused by, anyway?

[broceanic]

Really? Honestly, that's ridiculous.

[so says the guy that mega evolves sharpedo to jetski on it... he nods at the question.]

Aye. I wanted it for more power, but it didn't quite work out that way. Mega evolution won't work if you aren't properly in synch with your Pokémon-- it requires the deepest possible bond. Without it, it won't work, and it didn't work when I attempted it without the right intentions. When I did it as a way to be closer to Sharpedo... then we got it.

[blueser]

[The way Blue is looking at him might be a little concerning... Or it might just be that he's surprised and impressed. A power that works between the Pokémon and the trainer, huh? ...That wasn't too much more practical information than before, but it did explain a little more of what kind of power it was.]

[Could he achieve that kind of power? ... Considering how things had been with his Pokémon, up to this point.....]

Pretty impressive. [He sniffs dryly, looking away again. There's a strange expression on it before he clears it away, but the grass around him on the bank curls a little with sudden growth.] So Sharpedo's your partner, huh?

[He glances towards Eevee, who glances back at him with an unsure expression. Speaking of partners, at least someone can read Blue's expression properly...]

[broceanic]

[archie doesn't really know what to make of it, honestly. he's seen that look before from people close to him.]

Yeah. I mean, my entire team, but Sharpedo was my, ah... starter, I guess. That's always a special bond, eh?

[blueser]

Mm... [Blue watches Sharpedo float around with Gyarados and quietly sighs to himself.]

[It must be pretty pathetic of him, having less of a bond with his Pokémon than the nutcase who nearly raised an ancient Pokémon to flood the world. ...That's how he felt, anyway.]

How do you do it? [He asks, knitting his brow but still looking away.]

[broceanic]

You need two very rare stones. A Keystone, [he says, putting a hand on his mega-anchor, tapping the gem laid into the hilt.] And the corresponding gem for the Pokémon. Sharpedo can only mega evolve with Sharpedonite, Camerupt with Cameruptite, you get the idea.

[he shakes his head.]

They're... very hard to come by. Especially outside of Kalos.

[blueser]

[Blue's expression sours, and so does the grass around them, paling to a yellow in a small radius around him when he hears that. (Seeing the grass react only makes his mood worse, for what it's worth.)]

Sounds needlessly complicated. [He grumbles, rolling his eyes and raking his fingers in the dried-up grass.] But if they're mostly in Kalos, how come you Hoenn losers have 'em?

[Kalos... Kalos........ Now why would it only be there? He tries to think about what he knows of the region.]

[broceanic]

[archie just raises his eyebrows.]

I don't believe you think that for a moment. It's a battle technique, a complex and new one at that. I shan't be surprised if when you get to go home it'll be something you pick up yourself-- for Gyarados or Pidgeot.

[he shrugs.]

I didn't get them through stricly legal means. That said, they still exist in other regions and you can get 'em legitimately, it's just harder than it would be.

[blueser]

[Blue turns to roll his eyes at Archie, picking up a stray rock and skipping it towards the water.] Obviously. Doesn't mean that it doesn't sound like a pain in the Feebas... It's not the training part of it I'm concerned with. That, I have no doubts we'll figure out quick.

[Doesn't he? ...A bond with your Pokémon... He still doubted himself very much, when it came to that. He'd tried, he'd been trying so hard the last few years... But how would he know whether he'd actually accomplished anything in that?]

[He doesn't voice any of this of course, just staring out into the lake blankly, watching the Water-types.] ...Gyarados and Pidgeot can do it, huh. [His gaze slides from Gyarados to Pidgeot, soaring over the lake on the hunt for fish. Which of those two... Both had positives and negatives towards being able to achieve a so-called "perfect bond", he thought.]

[broceanic]

[ah...

he frowns.] Then... it's the bond?

[blueser]

[Archie only gets a cold, flat look turned his direction, and the wind that suddenly blows past with it is downright arctic.]

No.

[And that's all he's going to say on the matter, apparently. He fall silent, brows knit into a pinch as he turns his attention back to the Pokémon in silence.]
